Muri by Nilaya, at it’s core, is a marketplace for mindfully curated collections of home décor products, pre-made as well as bespoke ones. Nilaya believes in creating meaningful connections with the things you own. As an alternative to mass and fast décor, and the current throwaway culture, we will bring to you products that are beautiful, handcrafted and lasts for generations. With slow shopping, we hope to promote various independent brands and designers, skilled artisans and craftspeople.

We have to hold ourselves more accountable, we have to do our research, we have to ask questions of brands, we have to seek out the answers. We have to do the due diligence because it’s not okay anymore. We have destroyed communities and the planet. We really have to be better consumers, and we need to consume less. How important is validation for an artist?

The human connection surrounding the art emerged larger than the art itself - the stories of the artists need to be shared parallelly with the story of the emergence and practice of the art form - this is a way to preserve the tradition along with the craft.

Craft also brings a community together. It keeps the artisan with the family and they are involved in the process if she or he does not have to move to an urban area for a job with better wages.


What is the fair price for a traditional craft? Where does the difference lie between a skilled laborer and an artisan?

It is crucial that the product is positioned as a luxury product for the weaver to be able to earn a fair price. It is also important that the consumer understands the value of a skill-based quality product and thus engage in buying less over quantity of affordable products available in lower quality.
